Stolt Tankers has made history as the world’s first shipping company to use an advanced, environmentally friendly hull coating on one of its chemical tankers
During a five-day drydocking in China, 30,000-dwt Stolt Lotus received the X-GIT FUEL graphene sustainable hull coating. The coating is expected to have a lifespan of approximately 10 years, with an evaluation at the five-year mark to gauge the need for any maintenance.
Developed by Graphite Innovation & Technologies (GIT) Coatings, the X-GIT FUEL graphene technology demonstrates the potential to reduce fuel consumption and associated greenhouse gas emissions.
X-GIT FUEL is a hard foul release hull coating that introduces an ultra-low friction surface, improving vessel performance without the use of biocides, silicon oils, or toxic components. By reducing friction between the hull and water and preventing marine growth as the ship navigates, the coating is projected to enable fuel savings ranging from 5-7%.
This recent application builds upon Stolt Tankers’ successful collaboration with GIT Coatings earlier this year, where the graphene coating was applied to the propellers of more than 40 ships, establishing another world-first achievement.
Embracing such innovative technology aligns with Stolt Tankers’ commitment to exploring solutions aimed at enhancing fleet efficiency and minimising environmental impact. Furthermore, it bolsters Stolt Tankers’ ambition to reduce its carbon intensity by 50% relative to the 2008 baseline, by 2030. Notably, the integration of this pioneering solution supports Stolt Tankers’ clients in their quest to reduce Scope 3 emissions.
Stolt Tankers president Lucas Vos said, “The collaboration with GIT Coatings is a great example of how innovation is helping the maritime industry on its journey to a carbon-free future. Cutting-edge technology like this isn’t just about preventing wear and tear to our ships. The coating is a simple way we can help protect marine ecosystems, while maintaining operational efficiency.”
GIT Coatings chief executive Mo AlGermozi added, "This is a fantastic collaboration that speaks for itself. Stolt Tankers has so far coated the propellors on more than 40 ships and has now begun the process on its ship hulls. This helps both companies continue to deliver on their commitment to protecting the climate and the ocean.”
