Oil production across one of the largest FPSO hubs in West Africa has been increased by a considerable deepwater subsea installation project
TotalEnergies has extended the operational life and production of one of its floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessels moored offshore Angola by investing in a new subsea tie-back.
The Begonia field has been developed with a network of subsea flowlines, risers and umbilicals to the Pazflor FPSO in block 17. Production from Begonia, which started in July 2025, is expected to achieve 30,000 barrels of oil per day, adding to the existing output through the FPSO.
McDermott installed more than 40 km of rigid pipelines on its first subsea project in Angola. The Houston, US-headquartered contractor was responsible for engineering, procurement, construction, installation, precommissioning and commissioning activities for TotalEnergies’ development.
McDermott used 2022-upgraded pipelayer Amazon to install the rigid pipelines using its J-lay system and 2009-built North Ocean 102 vessel to deploy umbilical lines before it headed to the Brazilian market. It also employed its onshore fabrication capabilities in Luanda, Angola.
“This milestone reflects the strength of our integrated subsea capabilities, executed seamlessly from engineering through to offshore installation,” said McDermott senior vice president for subsea and floating facilities Mahesh Swaminathan.
“It reinforces the strategic value Amazon brings to our operations, especially in markets where deepwater infrastructure plays a vital role in advancing energy security.”
