Svitzer boosts ship handling in key Brazilian hub with new tugboat
One of the world’s largest tugboat owners has expanded its presence in northeast Brazil with a new azimuth stern drive vessel built a shipyard in the country
Svitzer has strengthened its position as a leading towage provider in ports in northeast Brazil by welcoming Svitzer Cassino in the Port of Pecem.
This 23-m tugboat was built by Rio Maguari Shipyard as part of a series of three vessels ordered by the Danish shipowner, all to Robert Allan Ltd’s RAmparts 2300 design with 70 tonnes of bollard pull.
Svitzer Cassino is the second of three tugs of this class and arrived in the regional logistics hub in Pecem in March 2026 following commissioning and sea trials.
Svitzer Copacabana was the first of this series and is operating in Paranagua, Brazil, according to automatic identification system data, supporting LNG carriers at a floating storage and regassification vessel.
Rio Maguari has almost completed a third tugboat, Svitzer Encintadas, for at its shipyard in Belem, Brazil, and two more for other Brazilian owners.
Svitzer’s RAmparts 2300 design tugs each have a beam of 11 m, ABS class, a FiFi1 firefighting system, twin diesel main engines, two azimuth thrusters and a top speed of 13 knots.
Svitzer Americas managing director Daniel Reedtz Cohen said the arrival of Svitzer Cassino helps Svitzer’s expansion strategy in Brazil and increases the company’s capacity to serve large vessels visiting the Port of Pecem.
“Serving increasingly larger ships requires technology, precision, and highly trained teams,” said Mr Cohen.
“The arrival of Svitzer Cassino reinforces our long-term commitment to Brazil and demonstrates our confidence in the growth of the port sector, ensuring the precision and safety that the market demands.”
Svitzer Cassino’s arrival raises the number of tugboats Svitzer operates in Brazil to 24.
The Port of Pecem, in Ceara, an important logistics and export hub in northeast Brazil, with maritime links to ports in Europe and North America. Svitzer has been operating in the port since June 2021.
