The global tug owner has placed an order for a newbuild battery-powered tug for ship towage and emergency response in the shipping lanes between Denmark and Sweden
Svitzer has ordered a battery-electric tugboat from Sanmar Shipyards to provide towage services in the Øresund Strait between Denmark and Sweden.
This 25-m vessel will be built to Robert Allan Ltd’s ElectRA 2500-SX design to provide shiphandling services with zero emissions in the busy shipping lanes between the Baltic and the North Sea.
An energy storage system with 1,818 kWh capacity was supplied by Corvus Energy and the vessel will feature two diesel generators for backup, extended endurance and fire-fighting operations. This 356-gt tug will have a bollard pull of around 70 tonnes, a draught of 6 m and a FiFi1 class fire-fighting system.
It is scheduled to enter service in H2 2025, as it is an ElectRA Dynamo-class tug Sanmar Shipyards has under construction at its yards in Turkey for its own stock.
Svitzer said this tug will have sufficient battery capacity to power two azimuth thrusters on the stern, and enable it to operate safely and efficiently on electrical power only.
Introducing this electric-powered tugboat will help Svitzer meet its ambitious targets for decarbonising its global operations while meeting the rising demand for ship manoeuvring services in Scandinavia.
“In recent years, we have experienced an increasing demand for green towage services in Scandinavia, including the Øresund Strait,” said Svitzer managing director for Scandinavia operations, Mathias Jonasson. “At the same time, we have committed to doing our part to significantly reduce CO2 emissions in the industry by 2030,” he said.
“Getting a new battery-powered tug solves both challenges as we can continue to provide reliable and safe services to our customers while reducing the carbon footprint.”
Sanmar is building a fleet of Dynamo ElectRA tugs for Turkish energy group Botas and another for its fleet, having already completed eight of these vessels. Five of these are operating in British Columbia, three for HaiSea Marine, two for SAAM Towage, one was delivered in 2024 to Buksér og Berging in Norway and Sanmar has one it is own Turkish fleet. Another was launched in Q4 2024 for SAAM’s operations in Chile.
Svitzer has also ordered its first battery-methanol powered TRansverse tug from Uzmar Shipyard in Turkey for low-emissions ship handling and docking in the port of Gothenburg, Sweden.
