UPDATED: Taiwanese and US projects select massive SG 14-222 DD offshore wind turbine

The exact number of units for the first 300 MW of the project remains to be confirmed, based on site specific conditions. A preferred supplier agreement between the companies is subject to a contract and a final investment decision from the consortium partners, Canadian independent power producer Northland Power and Taiwan-based developer Yushan Energy, which is jointly owned by Mitsui & Co Ltd in Japan and Yushan Energy Pte Ltd in Singapore.

The Hai Long offshore wind project was awarded through Taiwan’s 2018 grid allocation mechanism. The site is approximately 50 km off the coast of Changhua County. The first 300 MW will serve as an anchor for Siemens Gamesa to expand its local footprint and supply base in Taiwan into a regional industrial hub. As also announced, nacelle production for the Hai Long 2 project will begin in Taichung in 2024, and turbine installation will follow.

Siemens Gamesa offshore chief executive Andreas Nauen said, “Taking the next step in advancing the Hai Long 2 project by announcing it will conditionally use the SG 14-222 DD offshore wind turbine is outstanding news. We are thrilled the Hai Long partners have chosen our newest machine and are very excited to make this project the first installation of the SG 14-222 DD in the Asia Pacific region.”

Siemens Gamesa’s nacelle production facility in Taiwan will play a central role in introducing the latest turbine technology in the Asia Pacific region, will reinforce Taiwan’s pioneering position in the region and serve as a foundation to export offshore wind technology to other neighbouring markets.

Shortly after the announcement about the Taiwanese project, Siemens Gamesa confirmed that the SG 14-222 had also been selected for Dominion Energy’s 2.64 GW Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project, for which turbine installation is due to be completed by 2026.

With this second announcement, the total conditional order backlog for the SG 14-222 DD amounts to 2.94 GW.
