Med Marine is constructing a new harbour tug with emergency response capabilities for Piraeus-headquartered Vernicos Scafi Tugs and Salvage Maritime Co
Vernicos Scafi III will be built in Eregli Shipyard on Turkey’s Black Sea coast to its MED-A2575 series and Robert Allan Ltd RAmparts 2500W design.
This azimuth stern drive (ASD), 25-m tug will have a beam of 12 m, a draught of 6 m, a speed of 11 knots and bollard pull of more than 70 tonnes. Propulsion will come from two MTU-4000 M63 main engines in 16V formation, each developing 2,000 kW of power at 1,800 rpm and two Kongsberg-supplied azimuth thrusters.
It will have a winch for ship escort, a FiFi1-class fire-fighting system and oil recovery equipment for tackling emergencies. Med Marine expects this tug to be ready Q4 2023.
Med Marine sales director Melis Üçüncü said, “Both Med Marine and Vernicos Scafi are confident this partnership will mark the beginning of a long-lasting and mutually beneficial relationship.”
Vernicos Scafi Tugs and Salvage Maritime is the company formed by the merger of Scafi Società di Navigazione and Vernicos Tugs & Salvage in 2019.
“Four years after joining forces with Scafi, Vernicos Scafi continues its expansion with the acquisition of the first newly built tug in its modern history, to meet the growing needs of customers with increasing safety and reliability,” said Vernicos Scafi director Dimitris Vernicos.
“This investment marks the transition into a new era for our company, which will further strengthen our position and will add value to the fleet of our joint venture in Med Tugs.”
Vernicos Scafi is considering ordering more tugs for projects outside Greece. The company has already increased the fleet through purchasing an existing tug. In February 2022, it took delivery of ASD tug Vernicos Scafi II.
Vernicos Scafi operates mainly in the Piraeus area, but is also active in Thessaloniki and other ports in the eastern Mediterranean, Black Sea and Red Sea, including in Patras, Lavrion, Mykonos and Katakolon.
