A US tugboat and barge owner is expanding its fleet by building an ASD harbour tug to operate in Washington state
Western Towboat is set to build its own azimuth stern drive (ASD) tugboat with technology to reduce emissions and power for towing and handling barges along the US West Coast.
The Seattle, Washington-headquartered family run owner has selected the design for this harbour tugboat and is preparing to start building it at its own shipyard.
Western needs a tugboat with 1,940 kW of installed power and a bollard pull of 30 tonnes to provide light and medium-duty ship assistance, barge towing and handling in Elliott Bay, an inlet of Puget Sound, and the Duwamish River, both in Washington.
Glosten will design this harbour tug to include a selective catalytic reduction unit for treating exhaust from two diesel engines to minimise NOx emissions and to comply with US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Tier 4 emissions requirements.
“This ASD tug will be Western’s first EPA Tier 4-compliant tug, built for versatility, operational efficiency and streamlined maintenance,” said Glosten. “It will help Western selectively expand operations.”
Western said this will be Hull 21, and built at its own facilities, where it has introduced a floating dock for greater flexibility and independent construction and repair work.
“By having our own floating dock, we are now able to control everything inhouse at the tug factory,” said Western.
Established in 1948, Western owns 23 tugboats ranging in power from 230 kW to 4,850 kW with twin propellers and Z-drive azimuth thrusters, and seven barges of up to 10,000 tonnes capacity.
It operates this fleet from Puget Sound to the Aleutian Islands, from Arctic Alaska to the Hawaiian Islands and the Panama Canal.
