New vessel charging facility underpins the transition of all harbour craft to net-zero emissions in the Port of Singapore by 2050
A new electric vessel charging station has been opened at Wilhelmsen Ships Service’s Pandan Loop facility, supporting the electrification of harbour craft as part of Singapore’s maritime industry shifts towards lower-emissions solutions.
From 2030 onwards, all new harbour craft in the Port of Singapore will be required to be fully electric, use biofuels or be compatible with net-zero fuels such as hydrogen. Singapore is aiming for net-zero emissions from its harbour craft by 2050.
In partnership with Yinson GreenTech, this facility is positioned to support Singapore’s first fully electric cargo vessel, Hydromover, and other electric harbour craft.
Over the past two years, Wilhelmsen Ships Service (WSS) has also been a part of the Coastal Sustainability Alliance initiative with various industry partners to support the development of electric charging infrastructure to accelerate the wider adoption of electric vessels in Singapore.
Marking the milestone, WSS president, Kjell Andre Engen, said his firm believes “transitioning from internal combustion engines to modern electric harbour craft can significantly reduce emissions and enhance air quality at ports. This initiative aligns with our goal of minimising our carbon footprint in maritime logistics and deliveries.” He added it is “a tangible step towards assisting our customers in addressing Scope 3 emissions within their value chains.”
Managing director of marinEV, Yinson GreenTech’s marine electrification arm, Jan-Viggo Johansen, said collaboration was critical in scaling maritime electrification. “A robust charging network is essential to support the growing fleet of electric harbour craft, including our enhanced electric cargo vessel Hydromover 2.0 and electric passenger hydrofoil vessel Hydroglyder. These innovations, when paired with smart, future-ready charging solutions like this station, pave the way for cleaner, more efficient port operations.”
