Evergreen’s 24,000-TEU box ship is being touted as the world’s largest container ship
CSSC-owned Hudong Zhonghua Shipbuilding has floated out Evergreen’s newest container ship, Ever Alot.
“With an intake of 24,004 TEU, the six conventionally-powered sisters will be the world’s largest container ships in terms of nominal box intake and the first to break the ‘magic’ 24,000 TEU barrier,” consultancy Alphaliner said in a recent weekly report.
Ever Alot is part of a series of 14 container ships being built for Evergreen Marine. Six ships are being built by Samsung Heavy Industries in South Korea. Another eight – including Ever Alot – are being built by CSSC in China.
Ever Alot has the same dimensions as the ships built by Samsung but will have capacity of 24,004 TEU compared to the 23,992 of the Ever Ace introduced mid-2021.
As of August 2021, the record for most containers loaded onto a single ship is held by Ever Ace, which carried 21,710 TEU from Yantian to Europe.
As well as boosting its ultra large container ships, Evergreen is also expanding its feeder offerings after placing an order for 24 feeder ships with China’s Huangpu Wenchong shipyard in Q4 last year.
Currently, Evergreen has an orderbook of 70 vessels excluding committed charters. These are feeder, neo-Panamax and ultra-large container carriers.
