As tanker transport demand increases, the need for skilled tanker charterers becomes more apparent, explains Navig8 Group’s Mathias Haase
Mathias Haase, from Navig8 Group, will be teaching Lloyd’s Maritime Academy’s new Certificate in Tanker Chartering this September. Here he discusseswhy training in chartering is valuable in the tanker shipping industry.
Q: Why study a tanker chartering course this year?
MH: If you are in the business already, it’s very important to get a full understanding. We have some very interesting years coming up so you must be prepared for opportunities in the market. If you are new to the market, it will give you a strong insight into how the market works, and what is the day to day job.
Q: From your perspective as a charterer, what challenges does the tanker industry face?
MH: The industry is progressing fast, and facing big challenges with digitalisation and environmental constraints. In an ever more competitive tanker business, both charterers and owners have to find their way to succeed.
Q: What benefit would tankering professionals have in taking a chartering course?
MH: You will need a basic understanding across segments and geographical areas to succeed as a professional charterer. This course will give you a broad understanding of the market and the players involved.
Q: In your opinion, what are the main skill gaps in the industry?
MH: Very basic, knowing what you talk about and the ships you trade. Passing on the right information improves your integrity and allows you to see opportunities before others.
Q: Is there any value in taking a course like this via online learning?
MH: Online learning is the way forward. There is no need any more for expensive travel costs and taking days off work when you can have a course that you can follow in your own time. It gives you flexible hours, which is what most people want.
