Maritime autonomous surface ships will be trialled in Singapore’s waters following a workshop involving the nation’s port authority and research institutes, a Japanese shipping group and industry partners
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) is collaborating with a Japanese shipping group to trial an unmanned vessel.
Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) and its subsidiary MTI Co will work with the MPA under a memorandum of understanding to test technology enabling a port-to-port maritime autonomous surface ship (MASS).
These MASS trials will test the interoperability of autonomous vessels with port-based systems, including MPA’s vessel-traffic information system, and support the development of best practices and standards for navigation safety, route planning, fuel consumption, decision making using artificial intelligence, communications and cyber security in the port of Singapore.
“This collaboration provides an important platform for us to test and validate new concepts of operations in Singapore’s port waters,” said MPA chief marine officer, Capt M Segar.
“We look forward to partnering with NYK and MTI in these trials to advance smart, safe and sustainable autonomous shipping.”
MPA, NYK and MTI held a joint workshop in Singapore in June at the Singapore Maritime Institute with industry partners ClassNK and Japan Radio Co, research institutes Singapore’s Technology Centre for Offshore and Marine, Singapore Institute of Technology, Singapore Polytechnic, Singapore University of Technology and Design, and the Agency for Science, Technology and Research.
“This joint workshop marks an important step forward in the development of autonomous navigation systems,” said MTI president Hideki Suzuki. “MTI is proud to contribute to testing aimed at achieving safe and efficient autonomous navigation in Singapore’s port waters.”
These trials will be implemented under an agreement MPA and NYK signed in 2024 to jointly accelerate maritime decarbonisation, digitalisation and manpower development efforts.
