Ava Ocean is taking delivery of a new scallop harvesting vessel later this year with the latest satellite communications on board
Ava Ocean has selected a bonded network covering geostationary (GEO) and low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, and long-term evolution (LTE) communications for its latest newbuild, Artemis Arctic.
The Norwegian vessel owner’s newbuild will be employed for non-invasive scallop harvesting in the Barents Sea when it is commissioned later this year, using technology on board to identify, select and sort bottom-dwelling marine fauna. Ava Ocean said this technology enables the vessel to harvest scallops without damaging a highly fragile marine ecosystem.
On this newbuild, Viasat subsidiary Inmarsat Maritime will install its NexusWave bonded connectivity service with hardware for connecting to GEO satellites for Ka-band and L-band communications and Eutelsat OneWeb’s LEO constellation and area LTE, 4G and 5G networks.
This is a major upgrade from Inmarsat’s Fleet Xpress, which combines Global Xpress and L-band services from GEO constellations and is already installed on Ava Ocean’s existing vessels.
“Our unique fishing operation takes place in the Barents Sea, where Fleet Xpress has been valuable to maintain stable communications supporting both operations and crew welfare,” said Ava Ocean operations manager Preben Molnes.
“For the new vessel, we look forward to upgrading to Inmarsat’s NexusWave, further improving communication channels on board.”
NexusWave provides unlimited data, global coverage and high speeds, enabling Ava Ocean to safeguard the well-being of its 30-plus crew members by ensuring seamless connectivity for operational and safety purposes, alongside internet access for seafarers.
“NexusWave seamlessly integrates multiple networks in real time to deliver fast, always-on connectivity that supports the digital transformation and enhances crew welfare to a standard commensurate with a new era of shipping,” said Inmarsat Maritime sales manager, Christopher Hansen.
