A large US-based harbour tug owner is adding compact newbuilds to its fleet to service ships in secondary ports
Brusco Tug & Barge has expanded its fleet in the US by adding the first of two new harbour tugboats built by Diversified Marine.
This US owner welcomed Rascal to its fleet, which includes 11 tugs previously built by the US shipyard. It is working in harbours and terminals around Seattle, Washington state.
This 20-m ship-assist vessel was built to Robert Allan Ltd’s RAscal 2000 D design with 42 tonnes of bollard pull and 1,080 kW of power coming from two Caterpillar C32 T4 main diesel engines driving two Berg Propulsion MTA 522 Z-drives.
The engines were delivered to the shipyard by Peterson Cat and the azimuth thrusters by Thompson Tractor. Berg also supplied the engine-mounted MCH slipping clutch, “ensuring improved fuel consumption and manoeuvrability,” the Scandinavian equipment manufacturer said.
Diversified Marine president Frank Manning said a second tug of similar dimensions and capabilities, to be named Rowdy, will be completed soon. He also explained how unique these tugs will be.
“Rascal is the first in our latest series, the RAscal 2000 D, and I am very bullish on this series,” he said on a LinkedIn post.
“To my knowledge, I am not aware of a 20-m ship-assist tug being built for the commercial market in recent years,” Mr Manning continued.
“The trend for new deliveries has been 80 tonnes bollard pull in 24-30 m hulls. While I believe that trend will continue, I also believe the RAscal fills an emerging niche in secondary ports.”
He says these ports need modern tugs that meet US Coast Guard chapter Sub-M requirements instead of older secondhand vessels.
“Historically, secondary markets have been where tugboats go to die,” says Mr Manning. “Old tonnage in these ports are costing significantly more to maintain in a post Sub-M environment. Additionally, tugs have roughly doubled in cost over the last few years and until the last year, operators have been deferring newbuilds for primary ports.”
He adds newbuild RAscal-series tugs are more fuel efficient, “compact, powerful and cost-effective.”
Rascal and Rowdy have accommodation for four crew with two double staterooms, galley and lounge, bow and stern fendering and a Markey Marine DEPC-42 ship-towing winch.
