Electric ferries on the rise at Dutch Maritime Awards
Damen Shipyards Group’s e-ferry Bryggen scooped the KNVTS ship of the year award 2021 at the Dutch Maritime Awards.
The Royal Dutch Association of Technicians in the Shipping Industry presented the prize for the Bryggen ferry to Arriva, Copenhagen. It is an innovative design, fully electric, environmentally friendly, efficient to operate, economically viable and can carry 80 people.
A statement from the Maritime Awards said, “The ship’s sustainable qualifications are achieved through a range of innovative digital shipbuilding techniques, including remote measurements, for which an onboard network of sensors is installed. This results in higher efficiency and reduced maintenance downtime.”
The ship is emissions-free due to the choice of electric propulsion with batteries as the energy source. No diesel generators are installed.
The statement pointed out that Damen developed an innovative mooring system: it is fully automatic to make the loading time as short as possible. The loading system is automatically linked to shore power during docking.
To properly control and monitor the complex installation for sailing/unloading and mooring/loading, Damen developed a new control system, in which everything can be controlled and monitored from the bridge.
The statement summed up, “The ferry has a hull shape for the lowest possible water resistance. The bow is also ice-reinforced and equipped with a bow thruster for good manoeuvrability during windy conditions. The design ensures that Public Transport in Copenhagen, where customer Arriva will be using the ship, is making great strides towards a zero-emissions company.”
The other two nominations are also electric ferries: e-Ferry for Amsterdam, the Netherlands and e-Ferry for Kiel, Germany.
The Dutch Maritime Awards 2021 showcased 15 technical and nautical innovations. These awards comprised of five different categories that find their common ground in innovation.
