KVH has introduced an edge computer to manage hybrid communications and connectivity options on ships
KVH developed its CommBox Edge communications gateway to take advantage of the expanded available connectivity networks for vessels including low earth orbit (LEO) constellations, new high-throughput geostationary orbit (GEO) satellites, 5G, long-term evolution (LTE) and mesh networks.
CommBox Edge simplifies multi-orbit, multi-channel connectivity with applications for communications routeing, bandwidth management and onboard IT and computing. It was developed as part of KVH’s exclusive distribution agreement with Kognitive Networks.
CommBox Edge is an all-in-one management toolbox for maritime IT, enabling control of the growing array of wide area network (WAN) options.
It manages communications through very small aperture terminals (VSAT) using Ku-band and Ka-band GEO satellites, LEO services provided by Eutelsat OneWeb and SpaceX’s Starlink, 5G cellular and other services available through the KVH One global network.
“CommBox Edge, with marine-grade edge server technology, cloud-based controls and mobile apps, provides dynamic network and bandwidth management over these networks with a suite of data and user controls, real-time reporting, and more,” said KVH chief technology officer Rick Driscoll.
“It delivers crew, guest and vessel communications through a versatile, secure and fast SD-WAN architecture with cloud-based management.”
CommBox Edge includes two marine-hardened below-deck edge servers, the Edge 6 and the Edge 2, with flexibility in installation and support for an expanded set of WAN and local area network connections.
Administrators and users log into the CommBox Edge cloud portal and EdgeOS to manage its features and to configure dynamic data and WAN usage rules and quotas.
Users can create multiple LANs to support operations, owners, crews, internet of things, guests. They can establish dynamic WAN prioritisation, set security and connection balancing and boost connection speeds with advanced bonding to combine multiple WANs.
CommBox Edge also supports secure remote access to any onboard networked device, high-speed links to a virtual private network, deep packet inspection, and configurable egress that permits users to select their preferred country for internet access.
