AYK Energy has been selected to supply a battery system for Yampu, a vessel described as ‘the world’s first battery-powered self-unloading bulk carrier’.
Owned by Canada’s CSL Group, the 11,000-dwt purpose-built limestone carrier was named at ceremonies in March at Jiangjiang Nanyang Shipyard in China.
Under the deal signed with Finnish technology group Wärtsilä, Andorra-based AYK Energy will supply its Aries+S battery system for the vessel in 2028. The system weighs 131 tonnes and boasts a capacity of 6,758 kWh. According to AYK Energy, the battery will be integrated into the vessel’s hybrid diesel-electric power system.
CSL contracted Wärtsilä in 2024 to supply the complete hybrid electric propulsion system. Approximately 50% of the vessel’s energy requirements will be met through a combination of shore power and battery energy storage, according to estimates. Furthermore, the vessel’s design provides a clear pathway to transition to 100% electric operations.
Yampu will be operated by CSL Australia for Adbri Cement (formerly Adelaide Brighton Cement) to support limestone operations in South Australia. This project is part of a 20-year strategic partnership between CSL and Adbri to build and operate what will be the world’s first fully electric battery-capable self-unloading and self-discharging vessel.
The bulker will replace Adbri’s existing vessel, Accolade II, and will carry up to 2.7M tonnes of limestone per year, a 35% increase in carrying capacity.
