Grieg Star’s dry cargo ships under construction are being prepared to be retroffited to use green ammonia fuel when it is available
The Norwegian shipowner has ordered the next generation of dry cargo ships for shortsea and deepsea trade with space for ammonia tanks and handling systems, said Grieg Star managing director Atle Sommer.
He gave an overview of the company’s green strategy and investments during an interview at Riviera Maritime Media’s Maritime Hybrid, Electric & Hydrogen Fuel Cells Conference 2023 in Bergen, Norway.
Grieg Star will retrofit these newbuild ships with structures and equipment to use green ammonia fuel for zero carbon emissions during various trades.
“We are doing what we can to reduce energy use and improve energy efficiency, and we are making them ready for an ammonia retrofit,” said Mr Sommer.
“They are designed for an ammonia kit to be put on board, preparing everything and making space for it and having an engine capable of being retrofitted.”
Mr Sommer expects more shipowners to follow this example to cut greenhouse gas emissions.
Ammonia and other alternative green fuels will be presented and debated at Riviera Maritime Media’s Maritime Decarbonisation Conference, Asia – to be held 3-4 April 2024 in Singapore. Use this link to get more information and register your interest
