After signing an MoU, classification society Korean Register (KR), STX Energy Solutions and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) will partner to improve solid oxide fuel-cell (SOFC) technology for ships
The aim of the three companies’ joint co-operation is to standardise the technology and commercialise solid oxide fuel cells for ships, allowing the technology to be applied to different types of ships in the future. The low-carbon solid oxide fuel cell is a source of highly efficient renewable energy power generation that produces electricity through the electrochemical reaction of oxygen and hydrogen.
The agreement was signed to develop a future power generation system through sharing and applying technology and research resources to meet IMO’s upcoming regulations.
To meet IMO’s ambitious decarbonisation goals, the maritime industry is developing eco-friendly fuel application technologies such as ammonia and biomethane.
Similarly, SOFCs are being included in ship designs as a power generation facility and are being evaluated as means to reduce greenhouse gases.
Under the MoU agreement, each company plans to apply their expertise and strengths, for example by enacting and revising the technical standards to fit solid oxide fuel cells on ships, and by deriving and performing joint research tasks.
STX ES will be in charge of developing and supplying the SOFC systems for ships. DSME will manage the onshore testing, evaluate fuel-cell systems for ships and manage the fuel cell ship application concept research and demonstration project planning and execution.
KR will evaluate and certify the technical capabilities of the products for ships and will ratify and revise related regulations for safe ship mounting and operation.
Other notable industry collaborations include projects led by Alfa Laval and UK fuel-cell developer Ceres Power and South Korea’s Doosan Fuel Cell.
