Trelleborg managing director David Pendleton highlights challenges facing the LNG industry while urging operational vigilance
The LNG industry’s rapid growth demands unwavering attention to safety and operational efficiency, according to Trelleborg Marine & Infrastructure managing director, David Pendleton.
Mr Pendleton stressed the critical importance of the ship-shore interface, describing it as the backbone of LNG shipping operations while speaking at the LNG Shipping and Terminals Conference in London.
"No safe, efficient transfer – no business," he said, urging LNG stakeholders to prioritise stringent operational standards as the industry expands.
Mr Pendleton reflected on the sector’s transformation since 2016, noting a 40% rise in LNG carriers and a 500% increase in LNG-fuelled vessels. He acknowledged these advancements have multiplied the complexity of managing ship-shore transfers globally.
"Keeping a handle on everything happening around the world is our shared responsibility," he said, while pointing to challenges impacting LNG logistics, including the low water levels of the Panama Canal and heightened geopolitical risks in the Red Sea, which have forced vessels back onto historical trade routes.
Mr Pendleton recognised the sacrifices made by seafarers and their families due to extended voyages, highlighting their vital contribution to the industry.
Mr Pendleton’s address also touched on alternative fuels such as methanol and ammonia, which are increasingly being adopted alongside LNG.
He stressed the importance of scaling infrastructure and maintaining safety standards to support these emerging markets, noting projections that up to 85% of newbuild vessels could feature dual-fuel engines by 2030.
Mr Pendleton’s remarks set the tone for the eighth LNG Shipping and Terminals Conference, where, over two days, attendees will explore topics including floating storage and regasification units, LNG bunkering and workforce development.
