Vitol Bunkers has supplied a B30 biofuel blend in Singapore, the first time a biofuel with a concentration above B25 has been delivered
Some 1,100 tonnes of VLSFO B30 was delivered on 14 March by V-Bunkers’ new bunker vessel Marine Future to the vehicle carrier Grand Hero, under charter to Hyundai Glovis.
Built in China and delivered earlier this year to the V-Bunkers fleet, Marine Future is an IMO Type 2 bunker tanker with an overall length of 103 m, capacity of 7,000 tonnes, capable of supplying biofuel blends including B24, B30 and up to B100.
The current fleet of bunker tankers in Singapore are classified as ‘oil tankers’, restricting them to a maximum of 25% bio component in biofuel blends. Marine Future has no such restriction, hence can deliver bunker fuels consisting of 100% bio component (B100).
Biofuels are set to play a key role in decarbonising the hard-to-abate shipping sector. Incorporating higher concentrations of biofuel blends is a key pathway to mitigating carbon emissions.
In 2023, biofuel sales in Singapore reached around 520,000 tonnes, according to the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, up from 140,000 tonnes in 2022.
“We are pleased to be part of Singapore’s journey to decarbonise its shipping sector,” said Vitol Asia head Mike Muller.
