JFE Engineering’s BallastAce ballast water management system (BWMS) has completed one set of tests essential for obtaining type-approval from the US Coast Guard (USCG), the Japanese company said in a statement on 17 November. It reported that its system has completed the land-based test for brackish water and is proceeding to land-based tests for freshwater and sea water.
It has been working with the independent US test laboratory NSF International since 2014 as it works towards obtaining USCG type-approval and is planning shipboard tests with Canada’s Fednav. It expects to complete all its test and obtain type-approval by the end of next year.
BallastAce combines three functions: filtration, chemical treatment and venture tubes, which are designed to separate bacteria from mud and sand to enhance the disinfection effect of the chemical agent.
