Performance, energy and emissions monitoring sensors and software will be installed on a new fleet of crew transfer vessels (CTVs) with hybrid propulsion
Purus Wind’s HST Marine is deploying Reygar’s BareFleet technology on new vessels being built by Damen Shipyards, all with electric motors for hybrid propulsion.
Swansea-based HST Marine has seven new fast crewing service vessels on order to Damen’s FCS 2710 design and three to Damen FCS 3210 design, all of which will be fitted with BareFleet as standard.
HST Marine already uses Reygar’s software and hardware on four hybrid CTVs in operation, with three more soon to enter service.
Its investment in hybrid propulsion is part of the vessel owner’s commitment to provide low-carbon vessel solutions to the renewable energy sector and to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. This helps to lower the carbon footprint of building and operating offshore windfarms.
HST Marine’s hybrid propulsion CTVs are a mix of both controllable and fixed-pitch propeller systems that take power from either an electric motor or the main engine, enabling them to operate near silently and with zero emissions in electric-only mode.
BareFleet monitors the electrical and diesel power consumption of the hybrid drive, engine conditions and performance of the CTVs.
“We recognise the value of gathering and sharing accurate performance data from our vessels,” said HST Marine chief operations officer Christopher Monan. “It supports the company in winning new contracts and enables us to build lasting customer relationships.”
Hybrid propulsion has significantly cut fuel consumption, emissions and maintenance costs from these CTVs, as demonstrated through BareFleet.
“We have seen reductions in main engine operation of around 50% on our hybrid vessels, which has the holistic benefits of lowering fuel consumption, emissions and noise when in harbour, as well as lengthening service intervals,” said Mr Monan.
“Being able to demonstrate these efficiency gains with clear and concise performance data is of utmost importance to nurture trust with both new and existing charterer clients, while providing them with essential evidence for their own environmental reporting.”
BareFleet monitors the performance of hybrid vessels with a breakdown of electric versus diesel power consumption during transit and offshore operations. It provides operational statistics to enable HST Marine to evaluate the environmental performance of hybrid CTVs against conventional vessels and to make adjustments for further improvement.
HST Marine has worked with Reygar and had BareFleet packages on its hybrid CTVs since their introduction five years ago.
“The transition to hybrid CTVs is an important step towards zero-emissions targets for the industry as a whole and we have recently delivered several BareFLEET systems for new hybrid vessels,” said Reygar managing director Chris Huxley-Reynard.
“It is hugely satisfying to see the technology performing well for HST Marine, providing its teams with the data they need both on board and onshore.”
