Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line) will deploy artificial intelligence (AI) developed by Bearing Inc on its ships to evaluate their performance and optimise operations
K Line will introduce this AI technology into Kawasaki Integrated Maritime Solutions on board its more than 300 ships and in its shore centres for vessel performance analysis, improving navigation safety and reducing emissions through fuel savings.
AI will be combined with high-quality data collection and internet-of-things (IoT) technology and mixed with environmental data to reduce ship emissions through economical and safe navigation, said K Line. “With existing IoT technologies, certain levels of operational performance evaluation with accuracy using big data obtained in real time is still possible,” said K Line. “But further improvements in accuracy is necessary in the shipping, shipbuilding, and marine equipment industries.”
This accuracy is derived from implementing AI to collected data through analytics. “For many years, we have focused on collecting high-quality data and advanced data analysis technology,” K Line explained, “and have endeavoured to improve the accuracy of performance evaluation technology.”
As part of this drive, from the end of 2019 K Line conducted demonstration experiments to verify and evaluate data analysis technology by AI developed by Bearing. “As a result, we could see significantly higher accuracy compared with existing performance evaluation technology,” K Line said.
K Line expects to further improve the quality of its operational data using Bearing’s AI by evaluating the operational performance of each vessel in actual sea conditions and using this data for operational management, and accurately evaluating fuel reduction efforts using both software and hardware to improve operational performance and advance ship management.
K Line has prioritised creating management plans to improve safety and reduce its environmental impact through big data analytics and AI technology. As part of this, K Line has agreed to roll out IoT and share data with ClassNK’s Ship Data Center (ShipDC) on 140 ships, in one of the biggest investments in digitalisation and big data analytics in the maritime sector.
Kawasaki Integrated Maritime Solutions was officially endorsed by ClassNK in January 2021. This was the first Innovation Endorsement certificate ClassNK has handed out for products and solutions and demonstrates the trend for shipping companies to optimise fleet operations and reduce emissions.
Vessel and fleet optimisation and emissions reduction technologies will be discussed during Riviera’s series of virtual conferences and webinars during 2021 - use this link to access more details and register for these events
