The 333 m-long MSC World Europa will take its place as the largest LNG-powered cruise ship in the world when the vessel launches in October 2022
The newest ship in MSC’s fleet is expected to be more environmentally friendly than its predecessors, featuring solid oxide fuel cells, a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system and an enhanced shore-to-ship power configuration.
It is the first contemporary cruise ship to feature the brand new solid oxide fuel cell technology that was developed by MSC Cruises, Chantiers de l’Atlantique and Bloom Energy. The 150-kilowatt solid oxide fuel cell onboard is a demonstrator that will generate auxiliary power and help reduce CO2 emissions as compared to traditional internal combustion engines.
MSC Crusies said the demonstrator unit will serve as a ‘testbed’ to accelerate the development of fuel cell technology with the potential to enable hybrid propulsion for cruise ships in the future.
MSC World Europa meets IMO’s Tier III NOx emissions standards, according to the cruise line. The ship’s SCR system reduces NOx emissions by 90% when LNG is not available, and the ship is running on marine gas oil. In addition, ship-to-shore power connectivity allows MSC World Europa to minimise engine use at ports where infrastructure is available.
As with all new MSC cruise ships, World Europa features the latest wastewater treatment technology, in compliance with the IMO’s MEPC 227(64) resolution. The ship includes an advanced ballast water treatment system that prevents the introduction of invasive species in the marine environment through ballast water discharges, in compliance with IMO’s Ballast Water Management Convention.
The operator currently has three firm orders for LNG-powered vessels set for delivery between 2022 and 2025. MSC Euribia is currently under construction at Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint Nazaire, France and set to enter service in 2023. Construction on a third ship will commence in early 2023.
Together these represent an overall investment of more than €3Bn (US$3.3Bn).
