PSA Marine has ordered a new harbour tug with hybrid propulsion for its operations in Peru from Cheoy Lee Shipyards
The Singapore-headquartered owner expects this new tug to provide emissions-reduced towing services in Peruvian ports in 2023.
Cheoy Lee will build this azimuth stern drive (ASD) tug in a Chinese shipyard to a Robert Allan Ltd RAmparts 2400W design with bollard pull of 70 tonnes. Two diesel main engines will be linked to two Schottel RudderPropellers (SRP) and Sydrive-M mechanical-hybrid technology.
Cheoy Lee will construct this new tug with an overall length of 24 m and a beam of 11 m. Schottel will supply two SRP 460 drives with fixed-pitch propellers, with a diameter of 260 cm, and input power of 2,240 kW.
PSA Marine wanted the additional mechanical-hybrid solution to lower emissions from this tugboat when it is in transit and operating its fire-fighting systems.
“In PSA Marine Peru, we are constantly on a lookout for sustainability-focused innovations,” said PSA Marine Peru senior fleet manager William Revilla. “With reduced emissions, the forward-looking solution from Schottel allows us to operate our vessel more efficiently and sustainably,” he said.
Schottel’s Sydrive-M connects the port and starboard-mounted azimuth thrusters on the tug, enabling them to be driven together by only one main engine. In turn, this leads to reduced operating hours of the main engines, resulting in lower maintenance costs, less fuel consumption and lower emissions.
Sydrive-M needs no additional electronical components and has many advantages in the three main operation modes – light operations or free sailing mode, full-thrust operation mode and fire-fighting mode.
Schottel said it will also include the LeaCon certified sealing system on these SRP 460 drives, which offers safe and reliable protection against contamination of the seawater by operating materials.
Schottel has supplied propulsion units to more than 100 vessels built by Cheoy Lee at its main production facility, the Hin Lee (Zhuhai) Shipyard, located in southern China.
