Satcom Global has introduced a communications platform that enables seafarers to use their own devices on ships. IPSignature 4 is an intelligent multi-function communications management device that connects crew smartphones to the ship’s satellite communications equipment via a WiFi router. It enables crew calling services including voice over IP and access to social media.
Seafarers can use the service to access online applications using their own Apple, Android and Windows phones, tablets, smartphones and laptops. Satcom Global said IPSignature 4 can be used with L-band services such as Inmarsat FleetBroadband. Shipowners can use this as part of their crew welfare packages to boost seafarer retention. Owners and managers also have the flexibility to recover data costs from crew by charging for usage. They can manage firewalls remotely, access data flow reports and manage user settings through an online portal. IPSignature has two boards to provide reliable out-of-band management for times when the vessel is out of satellite coverage.
“IPSignature 4 provides managers with a reliable and secure tool for managing vessel communications, a means of better utilising plentiful data allowances with low cost crew calling capability and providing WiFi accessibility for crew,” said Satcom Global chief executive Ian Robinson.
