The technical management arm of Sovcomflot – otherwise known as SCF Novoship Technical Management – will retrofit Ecochlor ballast water treatment systems onboard three Aframax Oil tankers and one product carrier this year.
The Ecochlor system uses a two-step process to treat ballast water: filtration and then disinfection using biocide, chlorine dioxide.
Last year Echochlor established a Cyprus office led by the president and co-founder of Ecochlor, Tom Perlich.
At the time of writing, 47 countries have now ratified the ballast water management convention, substantially more than the 30 required. But their combined fleets comprise 34.35 per cent of global tonnage. This is just under the 35 per cent required for the convention’s entry into force.
