Echandia, a Swedish developer of heavy-duty energy storage systems for maritime and offshore applications, has received an initial order for battery systems on a (as yet unnamed) jack-up drilling rig in the Middle East
Echandia’s 860-kWh heavy-duty energy storage system is based on a maritime certified battery system. The container-based storage solution allows for simple plug-and-play installation on board.
The application of heavy-duty battery systems in the offshore energy industry will help to reduce fuel consumption and lower maintenance costs.
With mounting pressure on oil and gas producers to minimise the carbon footprint associated with the production of hydrocarbons, hybridisation of the drilling platform is seen as a way to help eliminate peak loads that would otherwise require multiple generators to operate under off-design conditions.
This allows for smoother operation, reduced fuel consumption and lower maintenance costs.
Echandia chief executive Fredrik Hellström said, “Echandia is proud to have taken this contract, and to be a part of increasing efficiency of natural gas extraction in the Middle East. There is a strong trend to reduce emissions in various parts of the fuel production process, often driven by the buyers. Our solutions play an important role in this transition and we are happy our products contribute to reduced emissions and energy efficiency in this industry.”
In other notable news, this week Odfjell Drilling reported it has installed a hybrid flywheel system aboard the jack-up Deepsea Nordkapp. The state-of-the-art system is part of the company’s zero-emissions drilling ambition, together with alliance partners Aker BP and Haliburton. Odfjell has installed a similar hybrid system aboard another alliance rig, Deepsea Stavanger.
