In late March, TUI Cruises’ Mein Schiff arrived at Lloyd Werft in Bremerhaven for an extensive refit, which is expected to last until early May. The cabins, restaurants and the spa will be upgraded before the vessel, formerly the 1996-built Galaxy, is renamed in a ceremony in Hamburg.
External works carried out by Lloyd Werft will include the installation of new sponsons and a ducktail weighing around 300 tonnes overall, as well as 200 new balconies and 202 balcony extensions. The yard will also fit window washing systems, repaint the exterior in a new branding, change the funnel logo, overhaul the propulsion systems, thrusters and stabilisers, and carry out necessary drydocking and repair work as required by the classification society.
Specialist outfitter Almaco has secured the contract to modernise cabins on Mein Schiff, as well as to upgrade the food handling areas. The company will also add 12 new cabins on deck 10, and convert crew cabins into passenger cabins on deck 4.
As far as food handling systems are concerned, the scope of work incorporates a comprehensive revamp of 20 areas, including a new steakhouse galley, a completely new pantry and galley for a fine dining restaurant, and additional works on new and existing bars.
Almaco will manage and supervise these works, with over 160 people providing a complete turnkey service
