US-startup Amogy Inc signed a letter of intent and a lease with Norway’s Sustainable Energy Catapult Centre to initiate testing operations for its 200-kW ammonia-to-power platform at a testing facility for new energy systems in Stord
Amogy is developing systems that generate power from ammonia by cracking liquid ammonia to hydrogen, and using the produced hydrogen to generate electrical power through proton-exchange membrane fuel cells.
The Sustainable Energy Catapult Centre is one of five centres established by the Norwegian government to accelerate innovation and make nascent technologies commercially viable.
Amogy is expanding its footprint in Norway, having opened its headquarters in Stavanger, Norway and appointed Christian Berg as managing director of Amogy Norway.
The company is looking to demonstrate the viability of its proprietary ammonia cracking platform for maritime vessels. The technology has already received an AiP from Lloyd’s Register.
Successfully demonstrations have been conducted using a drone at a 5-kW scale, a John Deere tractor with a 100-kW powerpack, and a Class 8 Semi truck. Later this year, Amogy will demonstrate the viability of the technology using a 1-MW ammonia-powerpack on a tug boat and an inland barge retrofit in partnership with US firm Southern Devall, a company that specialises in transporting bulk liquid chemicals and fertiliser products throughout the Mississippi River and the US Gulf Coast.
Mr Berg said the Catapult Centre in Stord will suit the local team’s needs “incredibly well,” noting, “The facility already performs tests on other ammonia projects and possesses the necessary infrastructure to support testing on our powerpack. We’re grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with their team of experienced engineers and access their innovative technologies as we expand our footprint in Norway and seek commercial opportunities in the maritime sector.”
The Amogy team will focus on test programs for a 200-kW powerpack prior to the tugboat later this year. Following the tugboat demonstration, Amogy plans to continue using the Stord facility for continuous testing for several months at a time.
