A new Norwegian shipowner has been launched to build, own and operate a fleet of ammonia-fuelled zero-carbon platform supply vessels (PSVs) on the Norwegian continental shelf (NCS)
Established by Amon Maritime, Amon Offshore will operate carbon-free PSVs based on a design that has already received approval in principle (AiP) from DNV and preliminary flag approval from the Norwegian Maritime Authority.
“This is the next generation,” said Amon Maritime founder and chief executive André Risholm. “We are combining new technologies with future requirements, enabling capabilities only available for newbuildings. Our vessels will be carbon free, future proof, and holistically designed for ammonia fuel from the ground up”, said Mr Risholm.
The vessels will be refuelled at a floating ammonia bunkering terminal at a supply base operated by Azane Fuel Solutions, a company affiliated with Amon Maritime. Green ammonia will be supplied by Yara Clean Ammonia.
The PSVs will be managed by Ula Ship Management, a joint venture between Amon Maritime and Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement.
Compliant with 2030 zero-emissions requirements
The Norwegian Government has stated in the Hurdal Platform that all PSVs on the NCS will be zero emissions by 2030. This requires approximately 80 newbuilds or significant modifications to existing vessels for delivery between 2025-2030.
Amon Maritime said its PSV has been developed for full compliance with 2030 requirements, offering carbon-free operations with best-in-class energy efficiency. Amon Offshore is working closely with clients to obtain charter contracts, enabling the first ships to be delivered in 2025.
The Amon PSV has been developed with the customer in focus, collaborating with oil companies on the Norwegian Continental Shelf to ensure cargo capacities and operational capabilities are just as future proof as the power technology and emissions reductions. The project started in 2020.
Kongsberg Maritime was chosen to provide the ship design and deliver key technologies for the project.
“These vessels will represent the next generation platform supply vessel and Amon Maritime will set a new standard in the logistics in the segment with these newbuildings”, said Kongsberg vice president of ship design Jørn Heltne.
The Amon PSV received AiP for gas-fuelled (ammonia) notation from DNV in March 2022, and NMA issued its letter of preliminary assessment in May. This is the world’s first preliminary flag approval for an ammonia-powered ship.
“It is great to see a modern PSV design developed for ammonia as fuel“, said DNV special ships segment director Arnstein Eknes. “Innovations like this, coupled with close collaboration between all stakeholders in the value chain is key to accelerating maritime decarbonisation.”
