As global threats to shipping grow, two UK-based protection and indemnity (P&I) insurance clubs have introduced additional services to reduce risks and improve knowledge
NorthStandard has enhanced its maritime-intelligence digital platform GlobeView, adding new digital resources and a dashboard providing real-time operational insights including an area providing information on different fuels.
This upgrade will help shipowners navigate potential global threats with greater knowledge and intelligence. GlobeView provides information and augmented risk-intelligence assessments of terrorism, piracy, stowaways, theft, and more for all major countries, ports and sea areas.
NorthStandard has also partnered with fuel testing and inspection provider VPS to launch the new Fuel Insights platform for its members. This offers real-time VPS data for insights into fuel specifications, calorific value and densities in major bunkering ports, supporting fuel management and fleet operations.
NorthStandard global director for marketing and communications Rob McInally said these enhancements were introduced during “an era marked by unprecedented advances in maritime technology, with the shipping industry looking to embrace innovative solutions.”
UK P&I Club has partnered with Psychology Applied as part of its new training programme to reduce accidents risk. This partnership will introduce club members to the approach, skills and tools required for improving daily practices and preventing incidents.
UK P&I Club and Psychology Applied will offer practical research-based methodologies that challenge traditional approaches to safety and risk management. This helps companies identify the sources of operational inefficiencies and the cause of accidents before they happen, rather than focusing on identifying potential hazards or improving through accident investigations.
Introduced as Learning from Normal Work, this training package will combine industrial psychology and tested industry practices to support identifying and addressing error traps before they result in an incident.
These training sessions will provide guidance on how to prevent human error, enabling employees to talk about operational dilemmas, prevent them using workarounds, identifying non-compliance and using gaps between plans and reality to improve operations.
“Shipowners and operators are facing an increasingly risk-intensive operating environment as they navigate market changes,” said UK P&I Club director of safety and risk management Stuart Edmonston.
“We understand the need to look outside of our industry to make sure we keep in step with the best practices in safety and risk assessment. Our collaboration with Psychology Applied provides our members with access to the latest innovations in practical psychology, to ensure their approach to loss prevention adapts to meet the modern demands of our industry.”
