A shipyard in Greece has confirmed it will be building a series of escort tugs with two Everllence high-speed engines and two rudderpropellers on each stern for various clients
ONEX Shipyards & Technologies Group has ordered propulsion from Everllence and Schottel for its expected series of newbuild escort tugs being built to a design by Canadian naval architect Robert Allan Ltd.
These 20 escort-class 25-m tugboats will be constructed to a RAstar 2800 design with a free sailing speed of up to 12.5 knots and a high bollard pull of 85 tonnes
Everllence will supply two MAN 175D-MM diesel engines with 16 valves in V formation and a maximum power output of 2,560 kW at 1,800 rpm for each tug.
Spay, Germany-headquartered Schottel has gained a contract to supply 40 steerable rudderpropellers of type SRP 490, with a fixed-pitch propeller in a SDV45 nozzle and 360 degrees of turn, for tugs being built in the Elefsina shipyard in Greece.
Schottel will also supply DuroVario LS slipping clutches to enable smooth acceleration and improved thruster handling, even during firefighting and ProAnode corrosion protection.
Each tug will have a sponsoned hullform that enhances towing and seakeeping, and will be compliant with ATEX Zone 2 standards for working in oil, LNG and LPG terminals, and have FiFi1-class firefighting systems to respond to emergencies.
“Our commitment to building innovative and high-quality vessels is non-negotiable,” said ONEX purchasing lead manager Christos Grigoropoulos.
“One of the most critical decisions for the success of our tugboat newbuilding is the selection of the best and most reliable propulsion systems.”
ONEX has an exclusive license agreement with Robert Allan to use the RAstar 2800 design for building these escort tugs in Greece.
“Our tugs will have top operational capabilities, with improved operational performance and reduced operating costs, making them ideal for the most demanding maritime operations,” said Mr Grigoropoulos.
ONEX intends to build these tugs on a speculative basis and sell them to owners in Greece and elsewhere in the Mediterranean region for fleets modernisation and expansion.
