A leading classification society has partnered with an Alfa Laval subsidiary to streamline the emissions reporting and verification processes for small vessels, including those supporting offshore, salvage and port operations
Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore has teamed up with StormGeo to provide emissions reporting and verification services to small vessels as environmental regulations tighten in 2025.
Ships of more than 5,000 gt are obliged to monitor and report fuel consumption and CO2 emissions and have this verified by an approved organisation under European and IMO regulations.
In 2025, the European Union (EU) legislation, including monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) and emissions trading (ETS) is expanded to include vessels of under 5,000 gt and above 400 gt.
This will include general cargo ships, offshore support vessels and those involved in salvage and harbour operations of 400 gt and above, if coming and going from European ports.
Bureau Veritas and an Alfa Laval subsidiary will provide emissions reporting and verification services to help stakeholders, including shipowners and charterers, to efficiently meet EU MRV, EU ETS, and IMO emissions requirements.
“Through our partnership, we are connecting StormGeo’s solutions with our environmental compliance platform VeriStar Green, to support the industry’s shift towards more sustainable operations while facilitating compliance with changing environmental standards,” said Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore vice president for digital transformation and solutions, Laurent Hentges.
StormGeo has 3,500 vessels using its EU MRV solutions and this is now extended to support smaller vessels which need to comply with these regulations from this month.
“We are leveraging the knowledge gained from working with large fleets to support the compliance needs of smaller vessels,” said StormGeo senior vice president of shipping, Petter Andersen.
“Our solutions are designed to streamline the compliance process, making it easier for all vessel types to meet the necessary environmental standards while optimising operational efficiency,” he said.
“By partnering with Bureau Veritas and integrating StormGeo with its VeriStar Green platform, we can offer these vessels the same level of expertise and solutions, enabling a seamless transition to meet the new EU MRV regulations.”
