With more shipping companies investing in gas-powered ships, it is increasingly important to certify lubricant oil for dual-fuel engines
With this in mind, Winterthur Gas & Diesel (WinGD) has validated Total Lubmarine’s cylinder oil Talusia Universal for its full range of dual-fuel (DF) engines, including its legacy Sulzer engines.
This enables shipping companies to use just one cylinder lubricant oil for gas-burning, dual-fuel, diesel and fuel oil engine types, minimising the need to switch and manage oil on board.
WinGD has provided Total with a revised no-objection letter (NOL) for adding dual-fuel validation for its engines that can burn both gas from LNG and fuel oil.
This NOL was awarded following extensive field tests incorporating more than 8,000 hours, including 4,000 hours performed on board a vessel with a 6X62DF engine burning LNG.
Validation NOL adds to the existing Talusia Universal NOL, issued on 3 March 2020, for use in WinGD X, WinGD X-DF, WinGD RT-flex, WinGD RT-flex-DF, Wärtsilä RTA, Wärtsilä RT-flex and Wärtsilä X engines, and in Sulzer two-stroke engines operating on fuels with a sulphur content in the range of 0-1.5% sulphur.
NOL means cylinder oil is compatible and proven for any IMO 2020-compliant fuel strategy. This includes using LNG and very low sulphur fuel oils for two-stroke diesel and DF engines using IMO 2020 and emission control area compliant fuels.
Total said Talusia Universal chemistry “ensures optimum engine cleanliness and efficient acid neutralisation to maintain the ring pack status and minimise cylinder wear.”
A single oil solution means ship operators and engineers no longer need to match different BN lubricants to different fuel types, avoiding complex BN management and cylinder lubricant oil switching.
WinGD’s NOL of Talusia Universal is valid for two years.
Lubricant oil validation and certification was discussed during Riviera’s Marine Lubricants Webinar Week, 23-17 November 2020
