Ahead of International Women in Maritime Day, 18 May, James Fisher and Sons plc head of maritime transport Krystyna Tsochlas reflects on her career path, challenges faced, and gives advice for aspiring maritime professionals
Krystyna Tsochlas’ journey into the maritime industry was not a mere happenstance; it was a path carved out by the strong links her family had to seafaring.
From a tender age, Ms Tsochlas was surrounded by stories and experiences of the sea that were imbued in her family’s legacy. Her grandparents, parents, and even distant relatives had all found their calling amid the waves, the salt, and the endless horizon.
With such deep-rooted connections to the maritime world, it was only natural Ms Tsochlas would find her own path within it, leading her to pursue studies in naval architecture and marine engineering, laying the foundation for a distinguished career.
Her professional journey commenced in 2000 with a graduate placement at Avin International in Athens with the technical team, a pivotal moment that set the stage for her future successes. It was there she encountered Michael Reppas, a distinguished mentor who would play a crucial role in her professional development.
Mr Reppas’s guidance was instrumental, providing her with invaluable insights and fostering her growth in the industry. Through his encouragement and unwavering support, she was able to navigate complex projects and overcome challenges with confidence and skill.
After several roles within shipmanagement at AVIN and then Cardiff Marine (now known as TMS Tankers), Ms Tsochlas moved into a leadership role at Ionia Ship Management in Piraeus, where she served as safety, quality and vetting manager from May 2008 to June 2012. In this role, she was responsible for ensuring compliance with international safety standards and enhancing operational efficiencies.
Her commitment to excellence paved the way for her subsequent tenure at Phillips 66 in London. Over nearly nine years, she held pivotal positions, including director of technical services and demurrages and pricing and demand manager, where she honed her expertise in technical operations and strategic planning and eventually moved into commercial leadership roles.
In April 2020, Ms Tsochlas joined James Fisher Tankships as managing director, overseeing the company’s tanker operations and steering initiatives aimed at modernising the fleet with environmentally friendly technologies.
Her leadership was instrumental in the delivery of the company’s first two LNG dual-fuel tankers, Sir John Fisher and Lady Maria Fisher, in November 2022 and January 2023. The vessels’ innovative design and construction technology significantly enhanced hydrodynamic performance, operational efficiency, and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
"The vessels incorporate innovations in design and construction technology," she noted, highlighting the company’s commitment to sustainability.
By September 2022, Ms Tsochlas advanced to head of the maritime transport division at James Fisher and Sons plc, where she currently oversees the company’s maritime operations, strategic development, and integration of sustainable practices across Tankships, Fendercare and Cattedown Wharves, the oil and dry bulk terminal in Plymouth.
Her role involves navigating the complexities of the maritime industry, fostering innovation, and ensuring the company’s alignment with global environmental standards.
Reflecting on her career, Ms Tsochlas acknowledges the influence of mentors who provided guidance and support and emphasises the importance of resilience and adaptability in overcoming challenges, particularly in a traditionally male-dominated industry.
"Building credibility and demonstrating competence were essential in establishing my place in the field," she shares.
Looking ahead, Ms Tsochlas identifies environmental regulations and technological advancements as significant challenges for the maritime industry. She underscores the necessity for companies to innovate and adapt to meet these evolving demands. "Embracing change and investing in sustainable technologies are crucial for the future of maritime transport," she asserts.
To those considering a career in the maritime or offshore industries, Ms Tsochlas offers encouraging advice, "The maritime industry is rich with exciting opportunities for those willing to embrace its challenges. Dedication, continuous learning and a passion for the sea are all ingredients for a successful and fulfilling career in shipping."
