Woodside has approved plans to develop the Scarborough gas field and upgrade the Pluto LNG facility
The US$12Bn project is the biggest oil and gas development to be built in Australia in a decade and targets the Scarborough gas field processed through the Pluto LNG facility.
Development of the offshore Scarborough field will include installing a floating production unit with eight wells drilled in the initial phase and 13 wells drilled over the life of the field. Gas will be transported to the Pluto facility onshore through a new 430-km trunkline.
Expansion of the Pluto facility includes constructing Pluto Train 2 and associated domestic gas processing facilities, and upgrades and modifications to the infrastructure of Pluto Train 1 to allow it to process Scarborough gas.
Woodside chief executive Meg O’Neill said approving the development of the Scarborough gas resource is a landmark achievement for the company.
“Today’s decisions set Woodside on a transformative path. Scarborough will be a significant contributor to Woodside’s cash flows, the funding of future developments and new energy products and shareholder returns.
“The final investment decision is underpinned by quality customer support with approximately 60% of Scarborough capacity contracted, including domestic gas for the proposed Perdaman urea project”
The announcement coincides with Woodside’s acquisition of BHP’s Petroleum arm. The Scarborough joint venture comprises of Woodside Energy (73.5%) and BHP Petroleum (26.5%).
Located approximately 375 km off the coast of Western Australia, the Scarborough field is estimated to contain 11.1Tn cubic feet of dry gas. The Pluto LNG onshore processing facility is located near Karratha in the northwest of Western Australia. First cargo from the single-train facility was delivered in 2012.
The Scarborough project will deliver energy to customers in north Asia with first LNG cargo slated for 2026.
