An affiliate of Perenco, and part of the Dixstone group, has started operating what it claims to be the world’s largest jack-up platform on a decommissioning project in the UK sector of the North Sea
Petrodec has started commercial operations with Petrodec Obana, which is decommissioning Perenco UK’s Galahad platform in block 48/12a in the UK sector of the southern North Sea where it will remove the topsides and the steel jacket.
Six-legged Petrodec Obana was completed by Damen Shipyard in Rotterdam for undertaking complex, heavy decommissioning offshore work in water depths of up to 65 m. It was engineered by merging two repurposed former jack-up drilling rigs, Brage and Gabrus, with a newbuild mid-section constructed in Dubai.
Petrodec, part of Dixstone and an affiliate of Perenco group, said Petrodec Obana will be moved to the closed Amethyst field after removing the Galahad platform. At Amethyst, it will remove the C1D, A2D and B1D jackets, which will be transported and offloaded in the Netherlands later this year.
Petrodec Obana was designed in collaboration with Petrodec, Dixstone’s specialist decommissioning arm, and Singapore-based Seatrium Offshore Technology.
It is equipped with a 2,000-tonne crane and has 3,800 m² and up to 12,000 tonnes of deck capacity equipped with roller systems capable of rearranging components on deck enabling multiple modules to be removed in a single campaign.
“Petrodec Obana is an excellent addition to the fleet, and is already fulfilling its role in the energy transition, decommissioning offshore platforms,” said Petrodec general manager Rainier Verhulst.
“Obana is now making a material impact on the safe and successful decommissioning business in the southern North Sea and beyond for our existing and future clients.”
Dixstone chief executive Louis Hannecart added, “In only four years, the Obana project has gone from concept to now being deployed in the market, fulfilling its role as an important decommissioning tool and supporting sustainable operations.”
