Yara International has pre-ordered 15 floating ship bunkering terminals from Azane Fuel Solutions
Yara International, a global fertiliser company with maritime subsidiaries, said it will "use its position to deliver green ammonia to the shipping industry".
One of the world’s largest ammonia producers, Yara International is partnering with Azane Fuel Solutions to establish the world’s first carbon-free ammonia fuel bunker network for maritime in Scandinavia.
The network is targeting a date for delivery of fuel to vessels by 2024, and Yara said the 15 units it has pre-ordered in a multi-year contract with Azane Fuel Solutions will cover the Scandinavian market.
"The collaboration between Azane and Yara is an important milestone in decarbonising shipping, leveraging Yara Clean Ammonia’s extensive production capabilities and global logistics," Yara Clean Ammonia president Magnus Krogh Ankarstrand said.
"These bunkering terminals are key pieces of the puzzle to ensure reliable and safe ammonia supply as zero-emissions fuel. Yara is excited to be a part of the project and to own and operate the first operational ammonia fuel terminals in the world," Mr Krogh Ankarstrand said.
In 2021, Azane Shareholders, AMON Maritime and ECONNECT Energy received public funds from Norway’s Green Initiative programme and grants from Innovation Norway and Norwegian Research Council to fund the development and construction of the first pilot floating ammonia bunkering unit.
Yara said its bunker terminals will be either barge-based or land-based and the designs for both types of terminals include storage tanks and processing capacity for the safe storage, handling, and transfer of ammonia. The bunker terminal is designed for efficient loading and unloading for ships with the option for truck loading and unloading, according to Yara.
"Through this agreement, Yara makes green ammonia available as fuel for ships in Scandinavia by 2024. This is a critical step for ammonia-fuelled shipowners," Yara’s statement said.
"For those of us who build ships that will run on green ammonia, this agreement means we can be sure the fuel is available for delivery when the first vessels are ready," said Amon Maritime chief executive André Risholm, who is also a Viridis Bulk Carriers board member and chairman of Azane Fuel Solutions.
