Our CO2 Shipping and Terminals Conference 2023, held at the London headquarters of Societe Generale, one of Europe’s leading financial services groups, brought together 185 industry leaders spanning the entire supply chain from ’emitter to shipper’ to explore the prevailing trends and market dynamics shaping CO2 projects in Europe.

Across four sessions and multiple networking breaks, including an incredibly well received barbecue and drinks on the terrace, the conference provided a platform for industry collaboration, knowledge sharing and the development of sustainable technical, operational and financing solutions that will drive current and future CCS and CO2 shipping projects. Northern Europe is at the forefront of these developments and delegates were given the latest information on key projects in Norway (Northern Lights), Denmark (Greensands), and the Netherlands (PORTHOS, ARAMIS) as well as the UK’s focus on offshore piped solutions for large industrial regions.

Valuable insights from various standpoints were shared on regulatory changes, technological advancements and innovative solutions. Discussions included the need for government economic support, such as subsidies and mechanisms, to bridge the gap between the cost of polluting and the cost of sequestration. Additionally, "First of a Kind" risks were examined, with emphasis on the importance of strongly rated counterparties or government support to bear unknown or potential liabilities throughout the value chain. The financing options for CO2 projects were also explored, including corporate guaranteed financing and project finance.

Shipping and other non-piped solutions are critical to connect dispersed emitting sites, and critical for the efficient transportation of CO2. To fully realise the potential of CO2 shipping, there is a significant market need for larger vessels with increased cargo-carrying capacity.

Our focus on CO2 shifts to Singapore next where we’ll host a conference on September 4th that will take a close look at activities in the SE Asia region.
