Collaboration, compliance and competitive advantage shape  timely decarbonisation conference 

Riviera’s Maritime Decarbonisation Asia Conference 2023 highlighted the need for innovative solutions that balance decarbonisation goals with maintaining profitability and competitiveness. Delegates especially appreciated the large and diverse turnout recognising that meeting ambitious maritime decarbonisation challenges requires collaboration and engagement across the entire supply chain.

The timing of the shipping conference was particularly significant given the European Union’s formal extension of its Emissions Trading System which happened at the same time. Experts in the room were able to explain the significance of this new development and discuss options to help companies comply, including adopting various low-carbon technologies and fuels.

Roundtable discussions and lightning talks gave delegates added value. In these focused and highly interactive settings delegates identified new opportunities for efficiency improvements and sustainability initiatives

Throughout the conference attendees were polled on various decarbonisation and energy efficiency topics. When asked to rank their preferences for addressing industry emissions the adoption of alternative bunker fuels was the most favoured option while investing in technology to improve energy efficiency also ranked strongly. Encouragingly, delegates felt technological innovation is driving progress and the development of new digital solutions is making it easier to monitor emissions and improve energy efficiency.

The conference’s key takeaways underlined the importance of collaboration, innovation and the right regulation in achieving decarbonisation goals. Delegates reported that by attending they were better equipped to anticipate and adapt to changes in regulations and policies, and this offered a competitive advantage in the market.
