Metalcolour Group has confirmed it will deliver approximately 350,000 m2 of DOBEL® Film Laminated Steel for the construction of Royal Caribbean International’s next Icon-class cruise ship. The ship will be built at Meyer Turku in Finland and will, just as its sister ship Icon of the Seas, have a tonnage of 250,800 gt and room for 7,600 passengers at maximum capacity. Metalcolour will deliver the first batch Q3 2023.
“We are proud to be trusted with this contract,” says Metalcolour Group chief executive Ingemar Forsberg. “This year, we not only have the pleasure of celebrating our 50th anniversary, but also one of our largest orders ever for a single cruise ship.”
Early in 2022, Metalcolour supplied DOBEL® material to first Icon-class ship, Icon of the Seas. Icon of the Seas has 20 decks with seven swimming pools and is scheduled to enter service early 2024. Royal Caribbean International claims the ship has the tallest waterfall, the tallest water slide, the largest waterpark and the first suspended infininty pool of any cruise ship so far. All in all, Metalcolour delivered 350,000 m2 of DOBEL® material for the wall panels, ceilings, doors and wet units.
50 years of innovative coil coating
With a wide range of coated metal products for both decorative and technical purposes, there are many areas where Metalcolours’ products can be used. With 50 years of experience, Metalcolour has valuable knowledge about potential uses for its products.
“Finding new applications will be the way forward for both technical and decorative coatings. We will continue to keep both existing and new customers happy with their co-operation with Metalcolour. The 50-year long journey will continue,” says Mr Forsberg.
Film-laminated metal is an extremely versatile product
DOBEL® film-laminated steel and aluminium are suitable for many types of interior applications. They are very flexible materials that can be shaped in almost any way. In the manufacturing process, using prelaminated steel or aluminium often results in fewer production steps and lower energy consumption. Film-laminated metal is also a good alternative from a recycling perspective, because used material can be melted down and reused.
Metalcolour has increased its focus on the construction and rail industry to broaden its market.
“We are getting a good response and have been supplying materials that have been used for security doors, interior fittings in lifts and in railway cars. The type of design that is requested varies over time and this is one of Metalcolour’s biggest challenges. Keeping our range of designs up to date and filling the need for product samples among our customers improves collaboration and is good for us, our partners and the end result.”
Our customers’ success is our success
Mr Forsberg emphasises Metalcolour’s main focus is delivering high-quality products. Being a flexible business partner and assisting with innovative solutions that increase value for the customer is also a key to success. With the products in the DOBEL® series, comes a quality and service guarantee Metalcolour alone can offer the market.
“Our DOBEL® products are well known in the targeted industries for high quality and we are often praised for our flexibility as a supplier. Over the years, we have also developed innovative solutions that have been beneficial both for our customer and for the end result. It is appreciated and helps us to create long-term business relationships,” concludes Mr Forsberg.
