A South Korean shipbuilder has gained an ABS certificate for its AI-powered condition-based maintenance system for vessels and offshore units
South Korea shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) has received a product design assessment (PDA) certificate from ABS for its condition-based maintenance system, SCBM, for ships and offshore units it builds for various owners.
SHI earned the Smart (MHM) Tier 2 PDA from the US-headquartered classification society for SCBM after demonstrating its functionality for anomaly detection and machinery diagnostics.
SCBM raises awareness of the health of onboard machinery and enables owners and operators to implement condition-based maintenance strategies. It uses real-time data and artificial intelligence (AI) for operations and performance analysis and provides advice on maintenance requirements for vessel machinery.
“The Smart (MHM) Tier 2 PDA is the first milestone in the joint development project with ABS for product certification of smart ship solutions,” said SHI executive vice president for the Ship & Offshore Research Institute, Dong Yeon Lee.
“SHI has applied and verified data analysis methods and AI analysis models,” he said. “Through this PDA acquisition, we expect to provide the enhanced machinery health monitoring and diagnosis based on real-time data analysis and AI analysis for a vessel’s machinery in terms of safer operation and management, to reduce operational costs to our clients.”
SHI and ABS are running a joint development project together to support enhanced machinery health and safety through smart ship technologies, said ABS senior vice president and chief technology officer Patrick Ryan.
“ABS is working with SHI to help develop practical applications for these technologies with a focus on safer operations,” he said.
