ABS will support a consortium developing the design of a new-generation hybrid-battery offshore support vessel (OSV) that will be built in Malaysia
As OSJ previously reported, the green OSV project is the result of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed in July in Kuala Lumpur by Malaysian shipbuilders Grade One Marine Shipyard, Muhibbah Marine Engineering and Shin Yang Shipyard and Singapore company Evolution Concepts. Evolution Concepts’ partners include Blue Connect, Gennal, MacGregor, Marine Commerce, Raytheon and Sindex Refrigeration.
Collaboration between the partners was facilitated by the Association of Marine Industries of Malaysia (AMIM).
The new-generation OSV, which will be powered by Gennal Engineering’s Blue G battery system, will be designed to ABS rules. ABS new technology qualification (NTQ) procedures will be used to evaluate the vessel’s Blue G battery system, a power source that can be charged by generator sets on board as well as any sustainable solutions from the shore.
The project will be supported by ABS Engineering in Singapore.
“The industry needs to implement green technologies to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and ABS is at the forefront of this challenge, committed to supporting our clients along this journey. And because the sustainability challenge is too big for any one company to meet on its own, we encourage collaborations such as this in Malaysia to reach our shared goal,” said ABS vice president of regional business development Pier Carazzai.
Construction of the OSV is expected to begin in 2023 and finish in 18 to 24 months.
