With a growing interest in maritime electrification, DNV has issued type-approval for the containerised battery room Corvus BOB (battery-on-board), easing the way for wider use in offshore support vessels, workboats and other vessels
Type-approval confirms Corvus BOB has met all of DNV’s stringent safety, quality and performance standards which makes it suitable for a range of marine applications.
The Corvus BOB is a standardised, plug-and-play battery-room solution available in 10-ft and 20-ft ISO high-cube container sizes designed for easy integration with existing ship systems.
The A60 battery-room container comes with batteries, a battery management system, HVAC, thermal runaway exhaust in addition to firefighting and detection systems.
Based on the Corvus Orca Energy system, Corvus BOB can be installed either on the deck or below deck, and multiple units can be combined to create larger energy storage capacities, providing scalability based on the ship’s energy requirements. It also integrates with all power management systems. This flexibility makes it easier to adapt the system to different ship sizes and power demands.
The standard shipping container dimensions make transport less complex and more predictable, as it provides easy storing, stacking and installation. Off-hire and installation time can be significantly reduced as the battery room is fully tested before it arrives at the shipyard.
Discussing the Corvus BOB’s benefits, Corvus Energy chief commercial officer Halvard Hauso, said, “Ship integrators, yards and owners want to minimise interfaces and potential complications on board. With a pre-approved battery-room solution, you ease the classification process, you have limited interfaces and all surrounding structures and systems can be prepared prior to delivery.” He continues, “We believe containerised solutions will be an important part of the ongoing transition towards cleaner and more sustainable maritime transport due to scalability and also due to the ability for new business models like ‘power-by-the-hour’ and leasing options.
Corvus reported it has orders for Corvus BOB units for several projects with deliveries in 2023. Going forward, Corvus will expand the container range to include other products from the company`s battery portfolio.
The global all-electric and electric-hybrid fleet totals 1,006, according to DNV’s Alternative Fuels Insight, with 769 vessels in operation and another 237 on order or under construction.
