A Paris-headquartered satellite owner has ordered hundreds of new assets to renew the OneWeb low Earth orbit constellation used for ship communications
Eutelsat has ordered hundreds of OneWeb low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites to renew its fleet and prolong the delivery of high-speed, low-latency ship connectivity.
Airbus Defence and Space has won a contract from the Paris-headquartered owner to build 340 satellites on its newly installed production line at its facilities in Toulouse, France, for deliveries from the end of 2026.
OneWeb has more than 600 satellites flying in 12 synchronised orbital planes 1,200 km above the Earth, providing low-latency connectivity on a global basis, including across the oceans.
Eutelsat’s new satellites will progressively replace early batches of satellites as they come to the end of their operational life, ensuring continued connectivity to vessels using the service.
The European operator currently has 100 OneWeb satellites under construction, ordered in December 2024, taking the total number of satellites ordered up to 440.
OneWeb is offered to vessel owners and operators as a stand-alone service or as part of Inmarsat Maritime’s NexusWave package, where it is combined with geostationary orbiting satellites.
Eutelsat will use these new satellites to meet the rapidly growing demand for LEO capacity in the fixed and mobile connectivity segments while providing critical, secure communications for government-related sectors.
“Procurement of these latest satellites ensures service continuity for the growing number of our customers and distribution partners benefiting from our ubiquitous, low-latency LEO capacity, and will enable us to pursue our growth path, building on the 80% expansion delivered in 2025,” said Eutelsat chief executive Jean François Fallacher.
