New partnership aims to revolutionise British Columbia’s energy sector with low-cost, zero-emissions hydrogen production
FortisBC Energy Inc, (FortisBC) and VulcanX Energy Corp (VulcanX), have joined forces to propel the development of hydrogen pyrolysis technology, which has the potential to transform the energy landscape in British Columbia.
This partnership is set to produce zero-emissions hydrogen and solid carbon from natural gas at a low cost, marking a crucial step towards achieving the province’s clean-energy objectives.
Hydrogen production from natural gas has traditionally relied on methods such as steam methane reforming and autothermal reforming. These techniques, while effective in producing hydrogen, generate significant amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2), contributing to greenhouse gas emissions.
In contrast, hydrogen pyrolysis offers a promising alternative. This innovative process splits natural gas into hydrogen and solid carbon without producing CO2, thereby offering an environmentally sustainable solution. The solid carbon by-product, rather than being a waste, can be utilised in various industries, adding further value to the process.
The advantages of hydrogen pyrolysis extend beyond environmental benefits. Economically, the process has the potential to reduce hydrogen production costs over time, given its simpler operational requirements compared with traditional methods. The ability to scale this technology to meet large-scale hydrogen demand further enhances its attractiveness.
Strategically, hydrogen pyrolysis aligns with provincial and national goals for emissions reduction, providing a local, sustainable source of hydrogen that can support long-term energy security.
FortisBC’s investment in this technology is a reflection of its broader strategy to transition from conventional natural gas to renewable and low-carbon gases. The company has been gradually shifting its gas system to integrate renewable natural gas and is now looking to hydrogen as a key component of its future energy offerings.
Through the Clean Growth Innovation Fund, FortisBC is not only investing in VulcanX’s technology but also fostering collaborations that drive the clean energy transition in British Columbia.
FortisBC vice president of energy supply and resource development Joe Mazza noted the importance of this collaboration in supporting the province’s CleanBC strategy. "We believe hydrogen has the potential to play a crucial role in a lower-carbon energy future and can help meet the energy needs of British Columbians."
This sentiment is echoed by VulcanX chief executive, Dr Omar Herrera, who highlighted the impact of technology innovation in enabling BC, Canada, and the world to achieve emissions-reduction targets economically.
