The Turkish tanker manager is deploying a hybrid communications network to increase bandwidth for crew connectivity and operations
Genel Denizcilik Nakliyati (Gedenlines) is installing a hybrid satellite communications (satcoms) network, including flat-panel terminals to access SpaceX’s Starlink, on its managed fleet of tankers.
The Turkish shipmanager is also upgrading cyber security to improve resilience to online threats as crew gain greater access to the internet and social media.
This project will involve retrofitting 26 vessels in service and installing six newbuildings with terminals to communicate with the Starlink low Earth orbit constellation and very small aperture terminals (VSATs) to access Ku-band global services over geostationary orbiting satellites.
For these solutions, Gedenlines selected Marlink and its local partner Ozsay Satellite for the installations and ongoing services.
“High-quality tanker shipping requires attention to detail and a dedication to the highest quality standards, something we expect from all our partners,” said Gedenlines IT manager Baris Kopdag.
“Our goals and ambitions are to maintain smart and safe operations across our fleet now and into the future.”
Marlink is deploying its Sealink Nextgen hybrid communications and suites of cyber security tools to support Gedenlines’ transfer into digital operations.
These combine Starlink and global VSAT with XChange network management and Marlink’s unified threat management (UTM) to enable low-latency, high-bandwidth communications and enhanced cyber resilience.
Improved cyber security includes application controls, web filtering, UTM, intrusion protection and anti-virus software.
