Kotug Canada is coating the hull of its emergency response vessel KJ Gardner with a non-toxic noise reduction coating as part of its commitment to lower the impact of operations on the environment
Kotug International and Horizon Maritime Services, which provides terminal and harbour towage services in Canada, worked with Graphite Innovation and Technologies (GIT) on this pilot project.
Kotug Canada is using GIT’s XGIT-URN coating to help reduce underwater radiated noise emitted from the ship’s hull and the vibrations that disturb marine life.
Two more vessels’ hulls will be coated with GIT’s graphene-based marine coatings to lower noise that potentially disturbs aquatic life in the Salish Sea and adjacent waters. These mammals, including the endangered southern resident killer whale that resides within the area of employment for Kotug Canada’s vessels, rely on underwater noise to communicate, navigate and find food.
“This is a major step forward to strengthen our focus to be a sustainable company,” said Kotug Canada director Steve Widmeyer. “We have set a high standard to meet these goals by using GIT’s XGIT-URN coating which significantly impacts meeting those targets.”
Also applied to KJ Gardner were GIT’s XGIT-Fuel and XGIT-Prop coatings, which help improve fuel efficiency and lower air emissions. Kotug Canada expects this vessel to significantly reduce its CO2 emissions over the next five years.
“Our XGIT-URN, along with our other two marine coatings, will support the desire to maintain healthy and vibrant oceans while still supporting the needs of their clients,” said GIT chief executive Mo Al Germozi.
“Our shared goal of reducing the environmental impact on the world’s oceans is of paramount importance. GIT is on a mission to contribute to the movement of green shipping activities.”
Kotug Canada operates a fleet of harbour and hybrid tugs, infield support ships, multipurpose icebreakers and emergency response vessels in Canada.
