The Maritime Air Pollution, Europe conference opened in Amsterdam on 11 October and runs over two days
The Maritime Air Pollution, Europe conference was opened with a speech by the Royal Association of Netherlands Shipowners managing director Annet Koster, who detailed the organisation’s position regarding EU proposals on the EU ETS, Fuel EU Maritime and energy taxation.
It was key, she noted, that the whole of the logistics chain including charterers bear responsibility for any changes to reduce carbon emissions.
Ms Koster added it was essential to ensure shipowners at all levels only have to comply with a single regulation, and that funds raised from the EU ETS be used to fund shipping’s transition.
Speaking virtually from the USA, Republic of the Marshall Islands senior vice president, maritime administration/regulatory affairs Nick Makar presented a paper examining the history of marine air pollution legislation and laid down the timeline ahead.
He noted the journey started with the Protocol of 1977 (MARPOL Annex VI) and will carry on through to the end game in 2050 but there are possible diversions along the way.
